The rent of living with gratitude is something you can never pay.

—Takimaru, to Bogie Woods in Ice Hell.

Takimaru (滝丸たきまる) is the youngest member of the Gourmet Knights and a good friend of Toriko, Komatsu, and the Gourmet Yakuza boss, Match. During his childhood, he had a Gourmet World disease called a "Curse" with no known cure. The Curse was cured to some extent by the leader of the Gourmet Knights, Aimaru, but a part of it still remains in his left eye to this day. Takimaru fights using techniques that involve dislodging bones and joints and uses Routines to increase the precision and effect of his attacks.

Appearance[]

Takimaru's "cursed" eye.

Takimaru is a young light-skinned man with slightly long black hair and keeps some of his hair brushed over his left eye, the reason for this being that his left eye contains the remains of a fatal Gourmet World illness called a "curse", which causes his eye to be permanently altered in appearance, having a bright pink pupil and a dark sclera. Whenever he becomes agitated his left eye's pupil begins to glow a bright pink color. His right eye however is perfectly healthy and has a normal blue-colored pupil. Around his head, Takimaru always wears an orange turban which has a blue crescent design printed on the right side. His outfit normally consists of a simple blue-colored long-sleeved shirt with orange edges along with a pair of blue pants and brown shoes.

The Century Soup arc is the only time Takimaru is shown without his turban. Specifically, as he leaves Life, Takimaru wears a pink shirt with a tan cape, and he appears to have gotten a haircut as well. Takimaru also goes without his turban later on, wearing a dark blue suit when he arrives at Hotel Gourmet to taste Komatsu's perfected Century Soup.

When he was first shown, he had one blue stripe painted or tattooed down his right eye which is meant to signify his low and young rank among the Gourmet Knights. Currently he now sports two stripes, signifying his rise in position within the knights.

Personality[]

Takimaru is a respectful and humble individual who treats others fairly and maintains a calm and quiet demeanor in public. He has a lot of respect for Aimaru due to having been saved and raised by him and wanted to do everything he could to treat his illness. In his youth, he was constantly scolded by Aimaru for his lack of concentration showing that he might have been far less focused when he was younger than he is now. He is a courageous individual who will do whatever it takes to achieve his goals and has enough faith in his abilities to stand up against those who challenge him. During the events at Ice Hell, Takimaru developed a strong friendship with Toriko mostly due to his past association with Aimaru and he also became friends with Komatsu as well, seeing him as someone who he can confidentially discuss the stubborn attitudes of both Toriko and Aimaru. He also developed a close camaraderie with Match despite the two having been somewhat hostile to each other when they first met.

Powers and Abilities[]

Takimaru uses a martial art style that involves dislodging and damaging bones and joints. He uses Pre-Shot Routines to increase the accuracy and success rate of his techniques. He has a good knowledge in human and animal anatomy, which allows him to perform his techniques. His blows are very fast, accurate and strong, as with them he can strike the innermost parts of his opponent's body in a very effective way. In battle, he is able to determine the enemy's weak spot after some minutes of combat, demonstrated when he realized that Bogie Woods was attempting to move so that Takimaru couldn't hit his sacrum.

He has an above average amount of stamina, suffering powerful and very painful blows from Bogie Woods without fainting, even managing to win. However, he has raised his physical and mental stamina to incredible levels, being able to last ten years of constant isolation, fasting, and physical exertion.[1]

Techniques[]

Takimaru Pre-Shot Routine small

Pre-Shot Routine (プリショットルーティーン Purishotto Rūtīn): A technique normally used in golf where one creates a mental image of success to increase concentration and accuracy, it increases the accuracy and damage of Takimaru's martial arts strikes, something taught to him by Aimaru. Takimaru's best Pre-Shot Routine can increase his concentration to the point that he doesn't flinch, even when stabbed in a vital organ, and prepares him to use the powerful Bottle Opener Shot: Secret Technique Cork Screw. The drawback is that it contains several movements which take time to perform, leaving him vulnerable.[2]

Takimaru Sennuki Shot Freezer Bison small

Bottle Opener Shot (栓抜きショット Sennuki Shotto, Viz: "Bottle Opener"): A technique where Takimaru grabs and twists an opponent's body, it dislocates bones and joints, causing paralysis or death.[3]

Sennuki Shot Ougi Corkscrew small

Bottle Opener Shot: Secret Technique Cork Screw (栓抜きショット奥義:コルクスクリュー Sennuki Shotto: Ōgi Koruku Sukuryū): A more intense version of Bottle Opener Shot, it can cause a bone to shoot out of an opponent's body.[4]

Takimaru Sennuki Press small

Bottle Opener Press (栓抜きプレス Sennuki Puresu): Takimaru presses a target between his elbows and one knee.[5]

History[]

Background[]

3NzJ2

Takimaru is found and saved by Aimaru.

As a child, Takimaru was diagnosed with a mysterious Gourmet World disease in his left eye which many called a "Curse" due to its incurable and mysterious nature, and was told that he would die within a month. After news of his disease was revealed it appeared that he was abandoned and left to die alone, a situation which caused him great grief at his young age and it made him fear spending the rest of his life alone more than dying. Luckily, as fate would have it, the leader of the Gourmet Knights, Aimaru appeared to him on a cold rainy night. Having been traveling the world consuming the illnesses of others as part of his doctrine and selfless nature, he promised to remove the fatal effects of Takimaru's "curse". Aimaru then "ate" Takimaru's disease, ensuring that his life was no longer in danger, but with the remains of the "curse" still visible in his left eye. Takimaru was then taken in and raised by Aimaru and he taught him the ways of the Gourmet Knights and the teachings of his doctrine, as well as the fighting style he currently possesses and the patience to perform routines.

Century Soup Arc[]

Takimaru's Sen nuki Shot

Takimaru vs Bogie Woods

Takimaru goes to Ice Hell in hope of earning enough money to buy a medicine to cure Aimaru's illness. He has a rocky start with Match and both are ready to fight until the arrival of Toriko and Komatsu. In Ice Hell, he stays with Toriko and his group. Though initially fighting each other, they start to work together to fight against Gourmet Corp.. He fights against Bogie Woods.[6] Initially failing to injure Bogie because of his odd bone structure, Takimaru finally incapacitates him by removing his sacrum but at the cost of several severe injuries.[7] He is later given some first aid treatment by Teppei.

Afterwards, he, along with Toriko and others, goes to Life in order to find a medicine to heal all diseases. On receiving the medicine from Yosaku, he is finally able to treat Aimaru. Toriko calls him when Komatsu completes the Century Soup.

Bubble Fruit Arc[]

Takimaru, along with the rest of the Gourmet Knights, meets Toriko and Komatsu at Simple Diet Hill. Upon seeing them, Takimaru greets Toriko and Komatsu, happy to see them again after their last meeting. However Toriko and Aimaru go off to have a private conversation, leaving Takimaru and Komatsu to spend the rest of the day catching up and discussing how stubborn both Toriko and Aimaru can be. The next day, Takimaru takes both Toriko and Komatsu to the main village in Eco Land where they meet its mayor Nonchy, who gladly welcomes them and tells them that the source of the Eco Nori is the Solar Turtles, which the village uses as a power source. Nonchy then shows them his Solar Turtle and explains that in order to gain the nori they need to charge up the turtles, but since it's already nighttime they have to charge them up manually via the special crank installed in their tails. Toriko, due to his strength, is then forced to power up all the Solar Turtles, while Takimaru and Komatsu watch on, and by the next day they gather up enough nori to head back home. Upon returning to the Gourmet Knights' camp, Aimaru and Toriko prepare to bid each other farewell but not before getting into another argument, which aggravates both Takimaru and Komatsu.[8]

Cooking Festival Arc[]

Takimaru Mon Planc

In the anime, after the Four Beasts are defeated, Takimaru and Aimaru volunteer to help with the cleanup and are assigned to capture the Mon Planc, the monster plant that was carried into Human World by the Four Beasts. Although mainly Toriko fights the Mon Planc, after the plant is defeated, Komatsu cooks clear, light soups made from the Mon Planc's vines for both Takimaru and Aimaru.

Gourmet Knights and Gourmet Yakuza

Takimaru and the others prepare to fight the Gourmet Corp..

Takimaru is later seen at the Cooking Festival[9] and watches on as Komatsu passes through the preliminaries. However when the Gourmet Corp. invades the Cooking Stadium to kidnap the chefs, Takimaru, along with his fellow Gourmet Knights and the other many capable fighters in the audience, jumps into the field to fight off the Gourmet Corp. and to protect the chefs. In the anime, it was shown that he was defeated and knocked out by Elg.

AIR Arc[]

A year and a half later, he is one of the many people who goes to the World Kitchen to say their goodbyes to the Four Heavenly Kings and Komatsu before they set off to Gourmet World.

PAIR Arc[]

When the delivery of Gourmet World ingredients finally comes into the Human World, Takimaru and Aimaru join up with many of the Human World's skilled personnel, who journey to Gourmet World in order to assist the Heavenly Kings. When everyone arrives in Area 8's Hex Food World, Daruma Hermit tells them that the Heavenly Kings have already departed from the Area 8 and headed to Area 7, much to their disappointment. However the Daruma Hermit offers them his last remaining Safety Monster, the Crabbus, to help take the group to Area 7.

ANOTHER Arc[]

The Gourmet Knights went to retrieve pieces of the Seven Beasts for the creation of Golden Cookware.[10] Takimaru headed to "Coral King" Corgolem to gather pieces of its body for the chopping board.[11] They return exhausted but successful after their six-day trip was stretched to a 10-year ordeal, due to the time dilation effect of the Seven Beasts' Back Channels.[12]

Anime and Manga Differences[]

  • In the anime, the sclera of Takimaru's eye is a lighter color.
  • In the anime Takimaru brings back some Century Soup for Aimaru while in the manga he does not as doing so goes against the Gourmet Knights' Doctrine which is to have only a simple diet.
  • A filler event in the Cooking Festival Arc is added where before the Cooking Fest, Aimaru and Takimaru meet up with Toriko to help him defeat the Mon Planc.
  • The anime shows Takimaru fighting Elg and losing during the Cooking Festival Arc, while in the manga it is never shown who Takimaru fought at the Cooking Stadium or what the outcome of his match was.

Appearances in Other Media[]

Toriko: Gourmet Survival 2[]

Takimaru makes his video game debut in Toriko: Gourmet Survival 2 as an assist character. Toriko and the others meet with him again in the Grill Valley of the Gattsuki Continent, having traveled there alongside Match in order to aid Toriko and his group.

Trivia[]

Takimaru CAD

Takimaru's CAD

  • His name 滝丸 roughly translates to "waterfall circle."
    • Just like the other members of the Gourmet Knights, he has a name with the suffix -maru
  • In his first appearance, Takimaru mentions that he is already at the drinking age, but his official Gourmet Checklist data states that he is only 18 years old, which is under the legal Japanese drinking age of 20. However, a majority of countries in the real world have 18 as the legal drinking age, and it is likely that the world of Toriko has 18 as the legal drinking age as well.
