The Swallowtail Bat (アゲハコウモリ Agehakōmori) is a species of bat with wings patterned like those of a Swallowtail or Monarch Butterfly.

AnatomyEdit

Swallowtail Bats are small brown-skinned bats that are no larger than a human's head and can grow to be about 70 centimeters in length and weigh 1 kilogram. They have somewhat large heads, which are disproportionate to their bodies likely due to their very large and pupil-less blue eyes. They have rather sharp teeth, which shows off their carnivorous nature.

Their most notable feature is their bright and colorful wings, which are covered in uniquely colored and spicy scales, and the pattern of their wings resembles those of a Swallowtail or Monarch Butterfly.

BehaviorEdit

They live in colonies and are cowardly by nature, so other than catching prey to eat, they rarely leave the safety of their caves.[1]

Powers and AbilitiesEdit

Being that they spend their lives in dark caves, Swallowtail Bats can see perfectly in the dark which gives them an advantage at hunting prey that is not native to their element. They are quite fast little flyers and since they usually travel in groups they can be quite overwhelming, however, they are in fact cowardly and only go after weak prey, but they can be easily subdued by skilled hunters. The Swallowtail Bats of the Gattsuki Continent have been shown to posses the ability to produce ultrasonic screams to attack prey and use their spicy scales to disorient them as well.[2]

As FoodEdit

Their bodies are not used for food, but the scales on their wings are used as a spice, called "Swallowtail Bat Spice", a tasty necessity in the spice cabinets of chefs worldwide.[1]

HistoryEdit

Puffer Whale ArcEdit

When Toriko, Coco, and Komatsu are trekking through the Labyrinthine Cave, a group of Swallowtail Bats appear from within the cave towards their direction. Toriko catches some in his mouth, slashes some with Knife, and skewers others with Fork, and Coco paralyzes another group with Poison Dressing. Coco realizes that the bats weren't attacking but were actually fleeing from something, which Toriko and Coco discover is the dreaded Devil Serpent.

VarietiesEdit

In the video game series, the Swallowtail Bats are shown to have a variety of different subspecies:

Swallowtail Firefly

Swallowtail Firefly

  • Firefly Swallowtail (ホタルアゲハ Hotaruageha): As a result of continued breeding in the dark for so long, this species has developed the ability to emit phosphorescence which makes them glow in the dark. The spicy and shining scales on their wings are more tasty then the more common breeds and burst with a vivid flavor when eaten. In Toriko: Gourmet Survival, it appeared under the name "Swallowtail Finest Bat or Butterfly Bat Rare Species", they appear in the Cheese Cave. In Toriko: Gourmet Survival 2, they appear in the body of the Regal Mammoth. In Toriko: Gourmet Monsters, they appear in Ice Hell and their attribute is "water". In Toriko: Ultimate Survival, they appear in the Pan Snowfield.
    Red and White Swallowtail

    Red and White Swallowtail

  • Red and White Swallowtail (コウハクアゲハ Kōhakuageha): A type of Swallowtail Bat with red and white stripes on its wings. It is used in Thai cooking. Due to their timid personality, they are quite difficult to find. In Toriko: Gourmet Survival 2, they appear in the Freezer Ice Field. In Toriko: Gourmet Monsters, they appear in the Cavern Lagoon. Their attribute is "water". In Toriko: Ultimate Survival, they appear in the Pan Snowfield where they are considered a top-level species.
  • Satan Swallowtail (サタンアゲハ Satan'ageha): A dangerous variety of Swallowtail Bat that bears the name of the devil. They are very poisonous and intense pain runs through the tongue if eaten carelessly, however its spice is quite intense if cooked correctly. In Toriko: Gourmet Survival 2, they are considered a top-level species and mainly appear in Konamon Desert. In Toriko: Gourmet Monsters, they are still a top species and can be encountered after clearing the Gourmet Pyramid in which they can be found in the bottom floor of the pyramid; if caught and trained its main attribute is "darkness". In Toriko: Ultimate Survival, they appear in Tsuyudaku Wetlands and are considered to be an ingredient of the "finest" category.
