"Unselfishness". To put it another way, it is the state of wanting "nothing". In "Food Honor" this falls under the category of worldly thoughts.

—Shuu explains a principle of Food Honor.

Shuu () is the assistant master of the Shokurin Temple under master Chin Chinchin. He was Toriko and Komatsu's mentor in the basics of Food Honor.

Appearance[]

Shuu is a tall man wearing oriental-like clothing with a sash tied around his waist and a light-colored turban on his head. His hair is dark, and becomes lighter as it reaches the tip of his braid, and his eyes appear to be slightly slanted. The symbol on his shirt "食義" says shokugi which translates as Food Honor.

Personality[]

Shuu is a calm and polite man of great discipline and honesty who always tells things as they are, even telling an opponent of his own physical weaknesses. He is very composed and can even maintain his composure while in a deadly battle with Toriko. He is also a master of Food Etiquette and can maintain his sense of gratitude and tranquility at all times which is a testament to his great discipline in the art.

Powers and Abilities[]

Shuu, in his own words has claimed he is nowhere near as powerful as Toriko, and that if even one of Toriko's techniques were to hit him he would die. However as a practitioner of Food Honor, Shuu is a master of delicate techniques. He is able to move with maximum efficiency with no wasted movement or energy. This allows him to defeat Toriko by evading until Toriko exhausts his stamina.

Techniques[]

Pknife

Petty Knife (ペティナイフ Peti Naifu): Shuu's special attack that, unlike Toriko's Knife, is not very strong and sharp but is very precise and consumes few calories. Using this, Shuu is able to cut Toriko's undershirt and facial hair while dodging his attacks.[1]

Food Technique: Instant Blood Removal (食義 瞬間血抜き Shokugi: Shunkan Chi Nuki): Shuu slashes his opponent with two knives, attempting to cut the arteries open.[2] In the anime he uses his Petty Knife to cut the arteries.

History[]

Bubble Fruit Arc[]

Upon Toriko and Komatsu's arrival to Shokurin Temple, they are introduced to Shuu by Chin, who requests that Shuu train the two in the basics of Food Honor.[3] Shuu gladly complies and proceeds to challenge Toriko to a match to test his skill and, to his surprise, finds Toriko to be incredibly powerful, but Toriko is no match for Shuu's swiftness and agility due to his skill in Food Honor which allows him to conserve energy and not waste movements. Shuu defeats Toriko by wearing him out and then proceeds to challenge Komatsu in a food preparation contest. The contest is to see who can julienne a head of Enamel Cabbage faster. Despite Komatsu's best effort he is no match for Shuu who manages to julienne the cabbage in less than 10 seconds. Afterwards, he prepares a bowl of beans that Toriko must delicately eat with 5-meter long chopsticks.[4]

The next day at around 5 AM, Shuu begins teaching Toriko and Komatsu the basics of Food Meditation and the principals that come with it. He then leaves them some special Torchorsetails to use in their meditation and to keep lit for 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes have passed Shuu calls the two for breakfast, however their "breakfast" turns out to be another type of training session in which they must pick the delicate grains of the Rice Among Eggs from an urn with only chopsticks and pass them into a bowl without breaking them, this naturally greatly aggravates both Toriko and Komatsu. Afterwards, Shuu takes them outside and teaches them the proper gratitude stance while in the presence of a Gratitude Cactus which will shoot needles at them if they fail to stand correctly. Finally he gives them a Rose Ham Seed which they must grow with diligence and gratitude and tells them that they cannot eat until they have made it grow. The task eventually takes them all night to achieve and by the next morning a small bud finally blooms and Shuu congratulates them on their achievement but quickly tells them in an ominous tone that they will not eat until they can make the seed blossom into a full flower, which leaves the two greatly horrified.

The following day, Shuu once again starts them off with a Food Meditation session, but the two successfully fulfill the 30 minute time in keeping the Torchorsetail lit, which impresses Shuu since it normally takes about a month to achieve such a feat, he then increases their meditation time to 1 hour. After meditation, Shuu prepares them another "breakfast" training session, in which they must grab some slippery Icefish Soumen with chopsticks, meditate while having a plate of incredibly soft and delicate pudding from a Pudding Camel on their heads and finally grab grains of rice from a distance with an extremely long pair of chopsticks. Later on Shuu witnesses Toriko's angered fit in which he accidentally destroys a temple tower with barely any effort thanks to the energy and movement conserving effects gained from their training, he then explains to them that this is the true power of Food Honor. He then prepares a Puffer Whale for Komatsu and asks him to remove its poison sack, and Komatsu manages to do so with barely any effort. Shuu explains that Komatsu's concentration has also been improved thanks to his training and that many chefs with Food Honor are capable of cutting creatures without their notice.[5]

Several days later, Shuu is seen admiring Toriko and Komatsu's vast improvement as they are now capable of maintaining 10 Torchorsetails lit for 2 hours, catching and picking all the Icefish Soumen and Rice Among Eggs with ease and handling the Pudding Camel pudding. After declaring their training under him to be complete, Komatsu asks if they can now learn the "top-class course" training, however Shuu reveals to them that they had been taking the top-class course all along and the ingredients they had acquired were actually ingredients from the temple's final exam, and as such he tells them that they have already learned Food Honor. After telling them, Master Chin quickly appears and praises Shuu on having trained the two well and that he will be taking over their training, he then orders Shuu to assemble all the assistant masters to protect the temple while he is gone as he plans to take the Toriko and Komatsu to the next part of their training, the Bubble Way. Before leaving, Toriko and Komatsu thank Shuu for all his lessons and Shuu gladly tells them that all he did was bring out their natural power and tells them to try their utmost in their next step and to stay alive. Shuu then goes to meet with the other assistant masters to discuss the ominous presence that is approaching the temple and begin to prepare themselves and their students for the possible oncoming attack.[6]

When the threat finally reveals itself they are shocked to see that it is members of the Gourmet Corp. led by their former friend and ally, chef Chiyo. Chiyo crudely tells them to surrender in exchange for killing them peacefully. However, assistant master Wagon tries to fight her off but is killed instantly without notice, much to the horrific shock of Shuu and the other masters. They then try to fight off Chiyo and her monstrous Scum Beast while protecting the temple.[7] Shuu tries to fight off the beast but it proves to be almost immune to his attacks and possesses a rapid healing rate, and in the end he is defeated after the beast reveals that it is capable of using Food Pressure, a technique almost similar to Food Honor, and thus its own reserved movements combined with its great strength proved to be too much for Shuu who lay on the ground with serious injuries.[8] Shuu then witnesses Toriko's arrival from his training and warns him of the Scum Beast's Food Pressure. However Toriko is undeterred and quickly finishes off the beast with his improved Kugi Punch, much to Shuu's amazement.[9] After the threat is later driven off by Toriko and the sudden arrival of Starjun, Shuu watches on as Chiru arrives and heals the mortally wounded master Chin.[10]

A recovering Shuu is later seen bidding farewell to Toriko and Komatsu as they say goodbye to Shokurin Temple and the Lost Forest.

AIR Arc[]

A year and a half later, he was one of the many people who went to the World Kitchen to say their goodbyes to the Four Heavenly Kings and Komatsu before they set off to Gourmet World.

Anime and Manga Differences[]

  • During his battle with the Scum Beast in the anime, Shuu uses his "Petty Knife" to cut its arteries, but in the manga he uses an actual kitchen knife in combat.
