J-Stars Victory Vs is an upcoming action tag team fighting game that acts as a crossover between characters from the many manga universes of Shonen Jump. The game is meant to commemorate the 45th anniversary of Shonen Jump.

Overview

It was first announced in December 2012, in the second 2013 issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, where Namco Bandai Games stated that they would be releasing Project Versus J, the "ultimate Jump game," next year. The announcement depicts One Piece's Monkey D. Luffy, Dragon Ball's Son Goku, and Toriko's title character. It was later officially named J-Stars Victory VS. A regular copy of the PS3 version will cost 7,980 yen (about US$80), while a limited edition (Anison Sound Edition) will cost 10,980 yen (about US$110). The normal edition of the PS Vita version will cost 6,980 yen, while a limited edition copy will retail for 9,980 yen (about US$100).

Hironobu Kageyama, Akira Kushida, and Hiroshi Kitadani are singing the game's theme song "Fighting Stars." People who pre-order the game will receive the J-Stars Victory Book, a volume bound like a Jump Comics book and filled with information and visuals of Jump heroes over the years. A free augmented-reality (AR) app lets you see the Jump heroes in your surroundings on the PS Vita.

Toriko's Gameplay

Toriko is a damage focused character. His moveset displays a wide amount of techniques, but his speciality is close range. Nonetheless, he can display some helpful long range moves as well. Toriko is not specially a speed character, but he can deal great damage with only one attack. Unlike the rest of the characters, Toriko cannot perform double jump. However, he has long jump, that varies its height depending on how long the jump button was pressed.

Toriko's basic combo is a Knife and Leg Knife combo that usually ends in the long range Flying Leg Knife if connected properly. The strong combo is a combination of Fork and Knife, focusing specially in Fork to penetrate the opponent's defense. The basic air move is a falling Knife, this move is somehow hard to connect.

Toriko's area attack is a spinning Knife, that covers omnidirectionally Toriko's close range. His Guard Break move is a powerful Fork that can easily breaks the opponents defense.

Toriko special abilities consumes stamina, but can be very useful in combat. There are three of them.

The first one is the Flying Leg Knife, his most powerful ranged move. Toriko sends Leg Knife that is projected trough the air. This move can travel long distances before it connects its target and is quite convenient at range combat.

His second special ability is his Homing Flying Fork. Toriko sends a Flying Fork that homes (presumably using Toriko's smell) to the opponent regardless of the direction. The only way to dodge this attack is to move right before it homes the target. This attack is also the special move command if done airborne.

His third special ability is hard to control, but is the strongest move Toriko has (aside from his Victory Burst move): the Kugi Punch. This move can be charged so it can release a 36-fold strike at max power. Obviously, depending on the time used to charge it, the amount of hits differs. This attack has a very short range, however, while charging it, Toriko can be moved by steps to reach his target. An useful way to attack with the Kugi Punch is to rapidly release it at the final of another attack or combo.

Toriko's way to charge stamina is the Guts!! Guts!! move. With this, Toriko eats a piece of meat that rapidly fulls his stamina bar. If charged for long time, Toriko even begins to heal himself. The drawback of the Guts!! Guts!! is that when finished, Toriko thanks the meal, something that leaves him wide open to be attacked. Using this move, Toriko can even double the stamina bar he starts with.

If the guard button is pressed right before being attacked, Toriko uses his Fork Shield, that not only protects him, but also shocks the opponent, leaving Toriko in a advantage to counter attack. The Fork Shield consumes stamina.

Finally, Toriko's Victory Burst is the 100-Ren Twin Kugi Punch. When triggered, Toriko charges at the opponent, striking with a 8-hits combo of Knife, Fork, Leg Knife and Leg Fork to finally end it with the 100-Ren Twin Kugi Punch, that if connected properly deals 100 hits (plus the previous 8 hits, makes it a 108-hits combo) and halves the health bar of the target. If the first 8-hits combo does not connect properly, however, the Twin Kugi Punch is not relaesed.
