To have your memories erased is equivalent to that person's life being taken... This is true victory...!.

—Livebearer, conceiting over his believed victory.

Livebearer (ライブベアラー Raibubearā) is the former boss of the Underground Cooking World and the former owner of Gourmet Casino before having passed on his business to the Gourmet Yakuza's boss Match.[1] Aside from this former occupation, he is also one of the top 100 chefs in the world, holding the 17th spot on the IGO Chef Ranking making him one of the top 20 greatest chefs in the world and due to the wealth of knowledge he's stolen throughout his former criminal career he is capable of almost any kind of cooking style.[2]

He was the main villain of the Meteor Garlic Arc until his change of heart and is now a close friend and admirer of Komatsu.

Appearance[]

Livebearer is a very large, muscular man with short wavy hair, and blackened teeth. His hair is actually a wig concealing screw-like implants which can give him conscious control over his sense of pain and his digestive system. He has a very large chin and very small ears and eyes as well as pink skin. His body (except for his head, hands and feet) is covered in what seems to be floral style tattoos (possibly paisley). On the back of his neck is a mechanism through which cables can be connected to his body. The cables are used to send Taste Data directly to his brain.

Personality[]

LivebearerFreakyFace5

Liverbearer's lust for his opponent's memories.

During his time as the boss of the merciless Gourmet Casino, which bet people's lives and memories away, Livebearer demonstrated little regard for the lives of others. He seemed to have had no sense of personal honor, as when he feigned at being a principled, honest gambler while secretly rigging the game from the start. Further, when he lost, he immediately ordered his men to forget the bet and attack Toriko and company, showing that he was a sore loser. Livebearer has an insatiable appetite for delicious memories, which he combines with a perverse enjoyment of stripping them out of people (something he calls his "ultimate pleasure"). He frequently drools and ogles his opponents lasciviously at the prospect of removing and consuming their memories. Coco compares his obsessive, destructive appetites to those of a parasite. He reacted with delight at the news of the arrival of two of the Four Heavenly Kings in his casino, but soon became more interested in consuming the memories of Toriko's chef partner, Komatsu. Nevertheless, Livebearer was extremely cautious so as to never truly risk his memories; using trick cards and a stacked deck of dangerous foods that he knows how to prepare safely.

However, ultimately Livebearer still had pride and respect as a chef; in his youth he had always worked hard to find a way to cook an ingredient regardless of how difficult it was, a feeling he had since forgotten. Seeing this determination at work in Komatsu, Livebearer decided to assist him in the difficult preparation of the Meteor Garlic and upon eating it, remembered the joys of eating foods that have been lovingly prepared and cooked. Livebearer now realizing that he had lost his love of cooking; after meeting Komatsu, he resolved to return to living a respectable life as a chef.

Since reforming and quitting his position as the boss of the Underground Cooking World, Livebearer has become a very social and friendly individual who seems to always be jovial around others, and has stayed true to his desire to become a respectable chef, as shown by his newfound appreciation for food and the importance of the Cooking Festival. However, Livebearer is still a drug user, and has no qualms about using his narcotics for both battle and pleasure.

Powers and Abilities[]

Livebearer modifications

Livebearer's numerous modifications.

According to Joejoe, besides being a "world ranker" chef, Livebearer is a "master in other ways". He is strong enough for the Gourmet Corp. to include him as one of the World Ranker Chefs that would be difficult to capture. Furthermore, he was capable of taking down a Rockmadillo with ease and showed no fear at the idea of fighting a Hannya Panda. Thanks to the memories he has stolen, he has a wide knowledge of ingredients and of the ways to fight them, plus intel precluded to most people, such as limited information about the Nitro.

It can be assumed by his physique that he possesses great physical strength. However, they do not appear to be top-notch, as he was easily defeated by Coco, though it is later revealed that Coco had used poison knocking on him to weaken him. He has a high tolerance to pain: he didn't faint despite having been bisected by a Nitro.[3]

When battling he appears to wield long, curved knives similar to scimitars as part of his Capture Method. During the battle at Cooking Fest he was seen swinging them following unpredictable patterns.

Chef Skills[]

Livebearer cooking at CF

Livebearer's mighty cooking skills.

It has been revealed that many of his cooking skills have been stolen from world famous chefs through the Food Concentration game. However, many of his own cooking skills appear to be genuine as shown when he helps Komatsu in preparing the Meteor Garlic and Komatsu also claims that Livebearer's cooking skills are already "Ultra first-class". He has no problem cooking the Medicinal Mochi and is the head of 30,000 employees. Despite his great skills as a chef, he is incapable of hearing the Voice of Ingredients, likely due to most of his skills actually being stolen from the memories of others and his lack of passion for food during his criminal career.

Equipment[]

Trik contact lenses

Trick Contact Lenses.

Aside from the knives he uses in battle, Livebearer has special device implants that can cut down his sense of pain and coat his digestive organs with a biodegradable plastic so he can eat lethal food without absorbing their harmful effects. He also uses Trick Contact Lenses to maintain an upper hand over his opponents in Food Concentration. On the back of his neck there is a sort of socket linked to his brain that he uses to access recorded memories.

Techniques[]

Doping Cooking small

Doping Cooking (ドーピングクッキング Dōpingu Kukkingu): A technique through which Livebearer appears to intoxicate himself. He then takes out two large blades which he swings insanely about, mincing everything in his path. It is likely this skill enhances his physical capabilities, but affects his mind negatively, as demonstrated by the ensuing blood frenzy.[4]

Brain Cut small

Brain Cut (ブレインカット Burein Katto): Livebearer slashes his target's head with a knife multiple times. However, this attack was not strong enough to harm a Nitro.[5]

History[]

Meteor Garlic Arc[]

Boss of Underground Cooking[]

He is first mentioned with "National Treasure" Setsuno, "Cooking King" Zaus, "Tray King" Yuda, "Ramen Master" Kurakage, "Oil User" Wabutora, "Iron Plate Magician" Moh, "Ethnic King" Klaraman, and "Poison Cuisine" Tylan, when Joejoe is listing the top chefs that would be difficult for the Gourmet Corp. to capture.

A Deadly Game[]

Livebearer 13

Salivating over Komatsu's memories.

When one of his underlings informs him of Toriko and Coco's arrival at Gourmet Casino, Livebearer expresses delight and drools at the idea of adding the two to his collection.[6] He subsequently approaches Toriko's entourage upon its entry into the VIP area, inviting them to an area "Beyond the VIP area."[7] He proceeds to explain that what is wagered in the premises is not ingredients, but rather, memories of ingredients that people have consumed. Such a venue allows extinct ingredients to be exchanged in the form of data directly implanted into gamblers' minds, albeit at the risk of losing their own.

He verifies the existence of the Meteor Garlic as a prize, albeit stored in his memory, and challenges Toriko and Coco to Food Concentration, wagering their memories in exchange for the prize, an offer which Toriko quickly takes up.

LivebearerFreakyFace2

Livebearer gloating over Toriko's risky move.

During the game, it is revealed that the secret to his winning streak are special Trick Contact Lenses that are used in conjunction with the Gourmet Casino's Gourmet Tasting Cards to enable the user to see in detail the flip side of the cards used in the game, hence granting him knowledge of all the ingredients and their point values. This allows him to pick and eat the ingredients with the highest point values, contributing to a huge point difference between himself and Toriko's team.

As the game progresses, he becomes even more confident and reveals his true colors, gloating loudly when Toriko becomes heavily injured after eating the Nitro Cherry, giving up on the Wisdom Panda because he believes that he will win, and finally revealing that he knows how to capture and eat every single ingredient in the Gourmet Casino. However, he fails to realize that Coco was setting him up to eat ingredients that would be deadly when paired with the final ingredient that he has to eat, the Poison Potato.

Livebearer attacking ep95

Livebearer going berserk.

Before his turn to eat the Poison Potato, Coco and Komatsu reveal their eating plan with each ingredient and how it greatly benefits them compared to his own reckless eating order. Despite learning of Coco and Komatsu's strategy, he still refuses to accept the events that occurred and how they took advantage of each ingredients nutritional value to counteract and recover from eating the Nitro Cherry, as well as increase the lethality of the Poison Potato back to its highest potency. At first he believes that it made no difference, since he took precautions and coated his entire digestive system with a biodegradable plastic as well as cut off his sense of pain. But before he declares his intention to eat, Coco reveals that he already knew about the coating and that when Livebearer copied Toriko eating Cheese Chinese Cabbage, he made the fatal mistake of allowing the microbes from the vegetable break down the coating and render it useless.

The Casino Boss Falls[]

LivebearerDefeat

Livebearer defeated.

After declaring his second give up, Livebearer decides to just forget about the game and have his entire society take what he wants by force. He then fights against Coco, but is quickly defeated by his Poison Knocking, and Coco says that he might have had a better chance if he tried his luck at the game instead. After Toriko eats the Poison Potato Komatsu prepared, he walks up to Livebearer and says that despite being asked to form a combo together, he has already found a partner and the best possible combo.

Komatsu and Livebearer presents Meteor Garlic ep96

A reformed Livebearer and Komatsu present the Meteor Garlic.

While still weak from the Knocking, Livebearer takes them to see the Meteor Garlic, sending Toriko, Coco, and Match to be seated for the meal while taking Komatsu to prepare the garlic. He is shocked to see the young chef go so far into preparation for such a difficult ingredient, but notices the Knocking wearing off. However, instead of attacking Komatsu, he helps him prepare the meal, inspired by the younger man's determination and seeing a younger version of himself in him. After preparing the Meteor Garlic, they bring it to the table, so they can eat it. After eating the Meteor Garlic, Livebearer explains that when he saw Komatsu's cooking skills, and it reminded him of the joy of cooking, so he decides to quit his job as owner of the Gourmet Casino and offers it to Match. He explains to the group about a man who is able to remove the poison from the Poison Potato perfectly and has information about the ingredient, ATOM. He tells them that the man's name is Joie, the personal chef to the King of the Jidar Kingdom.[8]

Bubble Fruit Arc[]

He is one of the people disgusted by the powerful odor of the Dodurian Bomb when it falls off of its branch.[9]

Four Beast Arc[]

He along with Tsurara Mama, Damala Sky XIII, Chiru, Sumire, and Lulubhu is contacted by Johannes to gather at the Gourmet Towers' knife building to help provide an antidote for those who are poisoned by the Four Beast's Green Rain. In order to stall the poison's effects, Livebearer calls his associate "Poison Cooking" Tylan to help the poisoned victims while the others prepare the special Medicinal Mochi to cure the victims.[10]

Cooking Festival Arc[]

Livebearer enters 21st on the stage of Cooking Festival. He is able to pass the three preliminary events: Triathlon Cooking, Scale Death Cooking, and Entire Island Cooking. He is able to reach the Championship Cooking, where his opponent would be Brunch.[11]

Livebearer and Chiru go past Five-Eyed Snakes

Livebearer racing in the Triathlon Cooking.

However the tournament is soon invaded by the Gourmet Corp. who arrived to kidnap as many chefs as possible, thus postponing the tournament. As the Gourmet Corp.'s members and Scum Beasts enter the stadium, Livebearer along with other powerful chefs stands up to them and proceeds to take out as many as they could. He is taken out of the battle when a tough Nitro not only withstands his Brain Cut attack, but retaliates and bisects him. Thankfully, a pair of Sayseiya manage to stabilize him before the wound becomes fatal. He explains what the Nitro is, expressing wonder at their ability to subdue it. Then Chiru appears and tells him about the Gourmet Corp. boss's monstrous power at being able to subdue the Nitro. When she removes her mask Livebearer comments about that being the first time he saw her face, surprised by the fact she is a girl, and smiles at the thought of seeing her true abilities.[3]

Billion Bird Arc[]

A year and a half after the events of the Cooking Festival, Livebearer is a part of a group of chefs who appear after the Four Heavenly Kings and Komatsu locate the chest containing the Billion Bird egg. While he doesn't hear the voice of the ingredients, he knows about the egg through some memories he won long ago. He is among the group that are astonished at how Komatsu, Sunny, and Zebra try to hatch the egg. He later goes back to his restaurant to cook the billion bird in his own style of cooking.

AIR Arc[]

Livebearer is one of the many people who goes to the World Kitchen to say their goodbyes to the Four Heavenly Kings and Komatsu before they set off to Gourmet World, and he and his fellow chefs promise to cook all the ingredients that they send.

PAIR Arc[]

When the delivery of Gourmet World ingredients finally came into the Human World, Livebearer joined up with many of the Human World's skilled personnel who journeyed to Gourmet World in order to assist the Heavenly Kings. When everyone arrived in Area 8's Hex Food World, they were told by the Daruma Hermit that the Heavenly Kings had already departed from the Area 8 and headed to Area 7, much to their disappointment. However the Daruma Hermit then offered them their last remaining Safety Monster to help take the group to Area 7, the Crabbus.

ANOTHER Arc[]

Jiji pairs up Livebearer and Sunny to travel to Area 4 and capture EARTH.

While traveling Area 4, they run into the side of the Snake King, which they initially confuse for a wall or mountain.[12] When they traveled through the Cave of Old Age, they came across Area 4's civilization. There they met Manan and Yosaku, who told Sunny how to reach the Gourmet Garden where he had revived EARTH. After obtaining the dessert and giving some to the civilization, they return through the cave and run into the rest of the group. Once they have NEWS, EARTH, and ATOM, they split up the dishes and the group, with Livebearer returning to the Human World.[13]

Merchandise[]

Livebearer has been featured on several trading cards of the Toriko Trading Card Game.

Anime and Manga Differences[]

Manga - Anime

LivebearerElectricBananaAnime

In the anime, Livebearer properly prepares the Electric Banana.

In the anime, his elaborate body tattoos were changed to a simple black color with no designs on them, likely due to difficulties animating the tattoos frame by frame.

The scene where he ate the Electric Banana was changed as well. Rather than biting down on the banana in its raw form and becoming intoxicated, he prepares it properly by boiling it in sugar syrup and removes the toxins, thus removing any references to him being a junkie likely due to censorship. However this creates a large contradiction, as it was due to him eating the raw Electric Banana with all its toxins which made him unable to eat the Poison Potato, yet the anime still plays out the Poison Potato scene as though he had eaten the toxins of the Electric Banana, though it maybe possible that he purposely undercooked it to get the effects.
