Chef Skills[]

Komatsu, at first glance, is a normal person. Indeed, he has no super-human abilities, of strength or any other sense that most Bishokuya and quite a few top ranking Chefs have, and is quite meek, attempting to hide or run away in the face of danger. Before meeting Toriko, Komatsu was thought to be a decent Chef, working at the five-star Hotel Gourmet as the Head Chef. However after meeting and adventuring with Toriko and experiencing the Ingredients in their natural environment, his true abilities blossomed, eventually turning his 5-star Hotel into a 6-star, and then gaining 88th place out of 100 in the IGO Chef Rankings.

His skill as a Chef is acknowledged by each of the Four Heavenly Kings, and though he has formed a Bishokuya-Chef Combo with Toriko, two other Heavenly Kings (Zebra and Sunny) also wish to form a Combo with him. Furthermore, many legendary people like his peers among the world's top 100 Chefs, artisans (Melk 1st and 2nd), and Bishokuya (Jiro, Chin Chinchin, and Ichiryu) have recognized his skill. Indeed, Livebearer states that Komatsu's genius far surpasses those of the Heavenly Kings, while the Kings themselves believe his skills are greater than those of Brunch, the world's 3rd best chef. Even the Gourmet Corp. boss, Midora, a massive gourmand who regularly feeds on top-class Gourmet World Ingredients, willingly admits Komatsu's food is delicious, after eating a banquet made by Komatsu using low-class Ingredients. In fact, Midora actually laughs aloud after consuming the feast, something even the original Century Soup is incapable of causing.

Setsuno, Toriko, and several others attribute this not to skill or experience but to his strong ability to hear the Voice of Ingredients, an innate ability to love and be loved by the Ingredients in turn. As such, his skills have risen to the level that in his very first Cooking Festival, he managed to make it to round 4, a feat considered to be exceptional for any first time participant.

Even Condor Window, one of the Five 10-Shell Cooks of Blue Grill, admits that he honestly take the hat off to the incredible way Komatsu prepares AIR to achieve 120% flavor.[1]

Hearing the "Voice" of Ingredients[]

Komatsu is able to hear the "Voice" of Ingredients, which are in actuality the voices of Food Spirits who share their knowledge of ingredients with those who can hear them, showing that Komatsu has a spiritual sixth sense of sorts that only a few individuals (mostly chefs) possess, however those who hear the "voice" are unaware of its origins and it usually only manifests within their subconscious. With the knowledge given to him by Food Spirits, Komatsu can locate rare ingredients and find out how to prepare them, no matter how difficult they may be to prepare. This ability became even stronger after Komatsu successfully recreated the Century Soup. When Toriko and Coco went looking for Ichiryu's Full Course Menu, Komatsu was able to hear the voices of the spirits responding to the 7 ingredients they managed to find, no matter how far away they were. Komatsu's ability in hearing the "voices" was further enhanced after his near-death experience in Area 7 and after drinking PAIR.

Thanks to drinking PAIR, Komatsu is able to hear soul's voice, specifically, a certain Appetite Demon who resembles Froese's Appetite Demon.[2] He has cooked all the full course of Acacia in the Kitchen of Eternity, including a piece of GOD, without any sacrifice - the acts that only Froese has been known to perform.

Food Luck[]

Komatsu food luck

Komatsu's incredible food luck

Food Luck is thought to be an extremely rare attribute, that helped guide Komatsu to find and prepare various ingredients. His Luck is so great, that it triumphs even the Four Heavenly Kings super-human senses, as shown when, on more than one occasion, Komatsu has been the first to find the Ingredients. The most notable example of Komatsu's Food Luck can be found during the capture of the Madam Fish. While the Four Heavenly Kings pick cardinal directions to locate the Madam Fish, Komatsu stays in the middle of the group. Eventually, Toriko, Sunny, Coco, and Zebra re-locate to new positions, only to find that all their abilities and intuition lead them to Komatsu's chosen spot.

Furthermore, during the time-skip, Komatsu was said to help Toriko stumble onto a Gourmet Highway, which is considerably safer than other parts of the Gourmet World. After the time-skip, he also managed to guide Octo-chan out of the Gold Labyrinth, a place which is said that none have escaped before. His Food Luck has become even greater after he was revived in Area 7, having been able to spot the minuscule opening within PAIR, which allowed for the ingredient's instantaneous preparation despite the Flavor Sages having spent centuries trying to find the easiest cooking method.

Knocking[]

Though not as good at Knocking as Toriko or other characters, Komatsu knows enough to knock the Shining Gourami, though it takes him a few tries.[3]

Food Honor[]

Food Honor is a mental concept in which, through continuous appreciation towards food, one increases their ability to utilize their skills, thus cutting down on useless movements and unnecessary energy consumption. After less than a week of training at Shokurin Temple, Komatsu, along with Toriko, showed rapid progress through training which would normally take people months to accomplish. Even before he finished his training, he gained enough delicate skill to instinctively find the poison sac in a Puffer Whale and remove it so effortlessly that the fish did not turn gold, because it was not even aware that the sac had been removed.

With Chiru, the world's 15th ranked chef and Head Chef of Disappearing Cuisine, he was able to learn how to cook the Bubble Fruit in one week. It should be noted that Chiru herself is incapable of cooking the Bubble Fruit before Komatsu assisted her, and not only that, Komatsu was able to come up with a method to make all the dishes in Disappearing Cuisine edible even by normal people without Food Honor, leaving Chiru amazed and a bit jealous of his unbelievable skill, showing that he may have as much skill or more so than the 15th best chef in the world.

Simplified Special Preparation Cooking[]

Using Food Honor, Komatsu's talent truly blossomed, and he has developed a skill that is revolutionizing the world of gourmet cooking. He is able to take Special Preparation Ingredients and develop methods for cooking them that are so quick and simplistic, any moderately skilled chef could use them.

Using this skill, he was able to cook the food of Disappearing Cuisine, the majority of which were Super Specially Prepared Ingredients (Ingredients which mainly seem to have a special method of eating it), in a way that any customer could eat without having to learn Food Honor. Furthermore, in five minutes he invented a method for cooking the Specially Prepared Ingredient, Medicinal Mochi, that could be completed in three minutes by an averagely skilled chef, and, having five extra minutes, he included a method to improve the quality and taste of the Mochi in the process, due to the consideration that since everyone will be eating them anyway, he may as well improve the taste.

His ability to simplify cooking methods culminated in being able to prepare the dishes in Acacia's full course, items that normally take between decades to hundreds of thousands of years to prepare in next to no time at all. Such as finding a way for ANOTHER to be cooked in only 65 years of perceived time as opposed to 600,000. This specialty is pretty much praised by Yuda and Chiru.[2]

Gourmet Cells[]

Komatsu Cells

Komatsu's cells activate.

At some point after being kidnapped by the Gourmet Corp. and having been saved by Toriko, Komatsu was infused with Gourmet Cells. The infusion gave him no visible increase in strength or change in his physical appearance; however, it seems to have endowed him with the ability to prepare and cook meals at an incredible speed and even sense the presence of high-quality ingredients, such as a simple apple covered in the scent of one of Acacia's Full Course ingredients. Being in the presence of this ingredient's scent even manages to activate his cells to a point where they are able to alter his face briefly, giving him numerous scar-like markings, similar to those of Otake's.[4] He may also have gained an immunity to Gourmet World diseases, having been able to survive there for almost a year and a half without contracting any "curses".

Komatsu's desperation to prepare AIR within the short time limit, causes his cells to finally activate, allowing him to perform all of the needed cuts at an intense speed. The cells change his facial form in a manner similar to Joie with his hair growing longer, his eyes blanking out, his skin tone changing to a darker shade, and his scar-like markings reappearing with increased length and numbers. With his ability unleashed just as AIR is about to hit the ground, he is able to prepare AIR just in time.[5]

Appetite Demon[]

Komatsu's Appetite Demon

Komatsu's demon.

Komatsu's Gourmet Cells host an Appetite Demon, but he is unaware of it until Chin Chinchin tells him.[6] Later, Don Slime comments that his Appetite Demon is cute and a light eater.[7]

With the Four Heavenly Kings, Komatsu has begun eating Acacia's Full Course and thus reviving his Appetite Demon:[8]

  • AIR:[9] Komatsu's Gourmet Cells awaken in his left arm, allowing him to morph his left arm into that of his Appetite Demon.
  • PAIR:[10] Komatsu's Gourmet Cells awaken in his right arm, allowing him to morph his right arm into that of his Appetite Demon.
  • ANOTHER: [11] Komatsu's Gourmet Cells awaken in his tongue, allowing him to morph his tongue into that of his Appetite Demon. It also gives him the ability to comprehend tastes of things that were previously inedible, like rocks, and reawakens tastes and memories that were forgotten.
  • NEWS:[11] Komatsu's Gourmet Cells awaken in his left leg, allowing him to morph his left leg into that of his Appetite Demon. It also gives him the ability to create and maintain Back Channels.[12]
  • EARTH:[11] Komatsu's Gourmet Cells awaken in his right leg, allowing him to morph his right leg into that of his Appetite Demon.
  • ATOM:[11] Komatsu's Gourmet Cells awaken in his head and torso (except his brain and heart), allowing him to morph his head and torso into that of his Appetite Demon.

Equipment[]

Komatsu is often provided with various items to protect himself from the dangerous environments that he encounters, usually by Toriko. He uses a mining helmet during the visit to the Cavern Lagoon. Later he receives a Lighter Suit to keep himself warm in Ice Hell. In the ascension to Vegetable Sky, he has an oxygen mask from Toriko with an Oxygen Leaf, which allows him to breathe in low oxygen conditions. He has a full-body bulletproof suit to help get him through Death Falls.

Before leaving for the Gourmet World to hunt Acacia's Full Course, Komatsu and the Kings are given the Riddle Chapter to help evaluate the above Capture Level 100 Ingredients, with the Chef being in charge of the "tray" that displays the information.[13] In order to cross the Heavy Rain Region to reach the Giant Air Fruit, the people of Hex Food World give him an extremely durable cape made of Monster Noko feathers.

He carries various containers, like Gourmet Cases and Gourmet Rucksacks, so as to collect and preserve the Ingredients he finds during his adventures with Toriko. He also carries basic cooking supplies so as to prepare any Ingredient he finds.

Toriko Cracker

Toriko Crackers are special crackers made by Toriko, which when popped, create an extremely loud explosion of sound. Komatsu uses one in Cavern Lagoon, while surrounded by herd of beasts and a Devil Serpent. The force of the sound causes his eardrums to burst and his heart to stop, effectively killing him. He is later revived by Knocking Master Jiro and once again meets up with Toriko.[14]

Melk Knife[]

Melk Knife Attack

Made from his previous knife that had broken, Melk the Second makes the Derous Knife from the single tooth of the legendary dragon Derous, which is said to have become king of the world with its only fang. The knife has shown to have enough cutting power to cut mountains in half.[15] His previous knife is one of the four knives to have surprised Melk the First upon seeing it. Before it was broken and reforged, Starjun was also impressed with his knife and almost took it from him. It is also a Revitalizing Kitchen Knife and thus can be used with Dark Techniques for healing wounds and regeneration of lost limbs.[16][17][18]

Derous Intimidation[]

When Komatsu uses the knife against an animal, the sheer power within the knife will present the illusion of the Derous Dragon itself, scaring most animals into running away. This is first seen being used against an Escarjaw when Komatsu is lost inside the Gourmet Pyramid.[19]

Dish-Dispensing Chef Hat[]

The chef's hat releases a plate.

After the time skip Komatsu wears a hat that seems to be able to dispense plates. This allows him to quickly prepare meals and serve it anywhere.[20]

Combo Stove-Frying Pan[]

The Combo stove-frying pan, is a frying pan with a small stove attached directly beneath it. By pressing a button on the handle of the pan part, it will instantly ignite flames in the stove. This item is extremely handy allowing Komatsu to quickly cook meals anytime, any place, even while on the move.[20]

Grindstone Boots[]

The Grindstone Boots (砥石ブーツ Toishi Būtsu) are a pair of boots that Melk created and can be used as a grindstone to repair Komatsu's knives if they get damaged in battle, as she did with hers when she dueled Toriko. She gave a pair to Komatsu to sharpen his knives when they dull in Gourmet World.[21]

Grindstone Apron[]

The Grindstone Apron (砥石エプロン Toishi Epuron) is a protective garment which Melk made for Komatsu that can be used like a grindstone to sharpen his kitchen knives almost infinitely at any time.[21]

Golden Cookware[]

In order to cook ANOTHER, Komatsu and his comrades, the chefs from the Human World and the Five 10-Shell Cooks, they first had to enter the Back Channel through the Food Spirit Doors in Giant Shell. However, as time and space are distorted on the other side, special equipment was required, the Golden Cookware.[25] Made from parts of powerful creatures known as the Seven Beasts (obtained by the Gourmet Knights), these seven pieces of equipment were made courtesy of Kuriboh, Melk the Second, and Pukin.[26] Komatsu had Melk make a can opener for him to open a Gold Can.[27]
