The Devil Serpent (デビル大蛇, Devil Orochi) is a giant, three-eyed, purple serpent with a fearsome reputation. It is said that the strength of the species varies with the individual, making it a very unpredictable opponent. Many legends say that it once battled head-to-head with the legendary Battle Wolf, however, the validity of these stories is debatable due to the Battle Wolf being able to defeat it with little to no effort.
The Devil Serpent is a long serpentine creature with an impressive body length, ranging usually between 35 to 40 meters long. It has a dark, purple-colored hide and a large white mane made up of hair-like tendrils that it can move about like tentacles. It has four legs (each with six digits & red claws) that can stretch to great lengths and regenerate if they should be severed. It can also grow more arms if needed. It has a fearsome looking maw filled with sharp, blood-colored teeth and three bloodshot stalked eyes that give it excellent vision and a ferocious appearance.
The Devil Serpent is a vicious and ruthless predator that takes on any foe that comes its way and will use whatever tactic or ability it has at its disposal to ensure victory. Also a ferocious hunter that will mercilessly attack and devour all in its way. When exposed to Battle Fragrance, more so than other beasts, it completely rages out of control, however, this heavily affects its judgement, as it might even attack foes that vastly outpower it.
It has a variety of powerful attacks: vomiting digestive acid, extending its arms, rapidly regenerating, compressing its skin to harden its body, poisoning a target (with a lethal poison composed of over one hundred different proteins). It also hides many pit organs, allowing it to detect prey even in the dark by sensing the body heat of its prey. It can even grow new and extra limbs in an instant to deal with troublesome opponents.
Both Toriko and Coco, two of the Four Heavenly Kings, had to work together to take out one, though it should be noted that they both were at a disadvantage, as Toriko had to fight while blind in the dark, and Coco had to dumb down his poison so as not to spoil the meat. In the end, the creature proved to have lackluster endurance towards heavy attacks and a poor immunity towards poison. It is also susceptible to knocking, with three strikes to its chest from a three-pronged Knocking Gun being enough to knock it out.
The meat of the Devil Serpent is normally rather plain, but those that spend a large amount of their lives within caves will store up fat within their bodies, increasing the meat's savoriness, in which case it is a delicious delicacy with several times the flavor and nutrition of beef. Moreover, if sautéed lightly, its bullion sizzles. It can also be made into a delicious hamburger patty that keeps all its delicious and nutritious flavor well packed, and when sandwiched together with Mineral Cheese and Neotomato, creates an outstanding burger with a very high nutritional value. Over 100 grams of its meat can fetch a price of over 150,000 yen.
Puffer Whale ArcEdit
After Toriko, Coco, and Komatsu made their way into the Labyrinthine Cave to locate the elusive Puffer Whale, Komatsu was kidnapped by a Bishokuya Bandit to be used as live bait in case of an encounter with a Devil Serpent. Toriko and Coco tried to search for him, but before they realized it, they were ambushed by a bloodthirsty Devil Serpent, who released an ear-piercing cry that shattered the entrance into the cave, sealing them all inside and ensuring the entrapment of its prey. A lengthy and difficult battle soon ensued between the Devil Serpent and the two Heavenly Kings who were at a major disadvantage due to Toriko being unable to see in the dark and Coco having to hold back on his poison on request from Toriko who wanted the Devil Serpent to remain edible upon its defeat. The Devil Serpent proved to be a fast and strong opponent, capable of taking advantage of its dark surroundings to get an upper hand several times. This, along with its ability to spit corrosive acid and regenerate severed limbs, made it a formidable opponent. Eventually, Coco tried covering up its pit organs in order to dull its senses but failed to do so when the creature proved to have far too many to be covered up. With its continued advantage, it unleashed several strikes on Toriko and even began spitting poison from its hair-like tendrils. When Toriko finally managed to deal some good strikes, the Devil Serpent became enraged and grew extra limbs to push him aside and then proceeded to attack and grab Coco. Once it grasped Coco tightly in its claws, it injected its tendrils into his and began filling him with poison. Luckily, Coco was easily able to analyze the Devil Serpent's unique poison and quickly produce anti-bodies for it. He also created a counter poison that quickly infected the giant beast and paralyzed it. Seeing the shadow of death looming over it, Coco knew its time has come, and told Toriko to strike. Toriko, having stood idly preparing a 5-Hit Nail Punch, released the full force of his attack on the serpent, sending it flying into the cave walls and knocking it out instantly. They then harvested its meat and went on to look for Komatsu.
Meanwhile, Komatsu and his kidnapper had a fierce encounter of their own with a large Devil Serpent. In a desperate attempt, the bandit threw Komatsu towards the Devil Serpent to keep it distracted, but to no avail, as he soon met his demise when he was attacked by a swarm of Scorpion Cockroaches. The hungry Devil Serpent then lunged towards Komatsu, and in a desperate attempt, Komatsu used the Toriko Cracker given to him by Toriko to try and scare the beast off, but it backfired and instead, briefly killed him. The Devil Serpent then tried to eat the near-dead Komatsu but was stopped by the sudden arrival of Knocking Master Jirou who easily subdued the beast and then revived Komatsu. Komatsu and the knocked out Devil Serpent were soon found by Toriko and Coco. After the events in the cave were over, Toriko used the Devil Serpent's meat to make himself a delicious burger.
Regal Mammoth ArcEdit
After Rin accidentally sprayed Battle Fragrance on one of the Gourmet Coliseum's Devil Serpents, it went on a rampage and made it into the coliseum were it easily killed and ate a Gerold, a Gauchi, an Elephantsaurus and a Silverback all in an instant. Toriko then tried to subdue the Devil Serpent, but its drugged-out rage proved to be difficult to handle. Eventually, it blindly sets its sights on the cloned Battle Wolf and her pup. However, this would be its undoing, as the Battle Wolf quickly bit off its arms at unbelievable speeds, and then in an instant, shredded half of the Devil Serpent's body into nothingness.
Anime and Manga DifferencesEdit
In the anime, a subspecies of Devil Serpent with a darker skin color and a higher capture difficulty level called Demon Devil Serpent appeared, during Komatsu's separation from Toriko whilst in the Labyrinthine Cave, and during the Gourmet Coliseum fight with the Battle Wolf. Both events in the manga only had regular Devil Serpents and it was never stated in the manga that these two Devil Serpents were of a different subspecies.
Appearances in Other MediaEdit
Toriko 3D MovieEdit
The Devil Serpent makes a cameo appearance in the ending credits of Toriko 3D Movie: Kaimaku! Gourmet Adventure!!, preparing to face off with Toriko and Coco.
Toriko: Gourmet SurvivalEdit
The Devil Serpent appears as a boss in the PSP game Toriko: Gourmet Survival, appearing later in the game. It resides in the cheese-caverns portion of Megamori Island and can be fought by either Toriko, Coco, or Sunny.
Toriko: Gourmet Survival 2Edit
Toriko: Gourmet MonstersEdit
The Devil Serpent appears in the Nintendo 3DS game Toriko: Gourmet Monsters. It is one of the many tamable enemy beasts in the game which the player can tame for coliseum battles.
The Devil Serpent has been featured prominently in merchandise, having been featured in a line of miniature figurines, keychains and trading cards, and also having appeared in every single Torikovideo game to date. It is also part of the "Monster Capture" collection, which consists of larger scale figures of 5 beasts from the series fighting the Four Heavenly Kings, made up of it, the Gerold, the Obsaurus, the Tundra Dragon and the Parasite Emperor.
- Though interestingly, despite being said to have once matched against the Battle Wolf, the genetically-engineered Battle Wolf was able to tear the Devil Serpent to pieces in the coliseum. Most impressive was that the Battle Wolf was exhausted from just having given birth, implying that either their ancient fights were just stories or that Devil Serpents were once stronger than they are now. It's also possible that there are stronger Devil Serpents in the world.
- The Devil Snake is likely named after the Yamata No Orochi, an eight-headed snake from Japanese myth.
